Dry AMD Treatment – Valeda and Eye Light

Dry AMD Treatment: Valeda and Eye Light

Dry Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50, yet many people are unaware they have it until it has already progressed.

We treat dry AMD using two clinically proven, non-invasive light-based treatments — the Valeda Light Delivery System and Eye-Light — both of which use photobiomodulation (PBM) to slow the progression of the condition.

Understanding Dry AMD

Age-related macular degeneration affects the macular — the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. In dry AMD, tiny deposits called drusen build up beneath the retina over time, gradually impairing the function of the cells responsible for central vision. Dry AMD is the most common form of the condition and, until recently, had very limited treatment options available. It often develops slowly and without pain, which is why regular eye examinations are so important. Symptoms to be aware of include blurred or distorted central vision, difficulty recognising faces, trouble reading or seeing fine detail, and in some cases, a dark or empty patch in the centre of your visual field. If you experience any of these, it’s important to seek an assessment promptly.

How Does Treatment Work?

Both Valeda and Eye-Light use photobiomodulation (PBM) — a non-invasive treatment that delivers specific wavelengths of light to retinal cells, stimulating cellular energy production and supporting healthier retinal function. As the eye ages, these cells can become less efficient and begin to deteriorate; PBM helps improve their ability to function effectively.

The Valeda Light Delivery System uses multiple wavelengths of light, including yellow, red, and near-infrared light, specifically designed for the treatment of dry AMD. Clinical studies have shown that Valeda can significantly reduce drusen volume and help slow the progression of the condition.

Eye-Light also uses PBM technology, delivering yellow (590nm) and red (630nm) wavelengths. Together, the two treatments complement each other well to deliver the very best results.

Each session treats both eyes in under 10 minutes. A full course of Valeda involves 9 sessions repeated every 4 months, while Eye-Light involves 8 sessions initially, followed by 6 further sessions repeated every 4 months. No referral is required — Dr. Janjua will carry out a thorough consultation and scan before treatment begins to assess severity and suitability.
